Full description
Discover a masterpiece of Art Nouveau architecture with an entrance ticket to the world’s largest Art Nouveau site at the Sant Pau Recinte Modernista. Built between 1905 and 1930 from a design by the Modernista architect, Lluís Domènech i Montaner, the Sant Pau Recinte complex was initially intended as a garden city to nurse the sick. It was used as a public hospital for a century, and has now been refurbished to its former splendor. By the late 19th century, the old Hospital de la Santa Creu in Barcelona's El Raval neighborhood needed to be relocated as it had become too small. The result was an ambitious project inspired by breakthroughs in health and hygiene. The institution has always been associated with charitable work, welfare, and the latest advances in healthcare. Marvel at the Modernista motifs of the renovated pavilions, and discover how the former hospital complex has become a knowledge campus for international organizations, such as the European Forest Institute, Casa Àsia, the Global University Network for Innovation, and the United Nations University Institute on Globalization, Culture, and Mobility. Delve into history of one of Barcelona’s most dazzling buildings. Stroll among the pavilions, set in gardens and connected by underground passage ways that showcase sculptures, stained glass and mosaics.

A fantastic example of modernist/art nouveau architecture in the form of an open air hospital campus where wards become individual buildings linked by underground tunnels. In a city where many tourists only know the name of Antoni Gaudí, it is wonderful to see the work of his contemporaries. In this case, Lluís Domènech i Montaner.

This is an insider tip for friends of Art Nouveau! Beautifully preserved or restored building ensemble. The audioguide informs about the architecture as well as about the hospital system and the state of medical science at the time. Interesting also the history of the hospital. There were hardly any visitors, we could enjoy the magnificent buildings and gardens undisturbed and in the sunshine.

A highlight in Barcelona

The museum hospital is not considered in many guided tours. We had planned this destination before we left. We booked the tickets online on site. It was not entirely clear whether the electronic evidence was sufficient. So we had the tickets printed out by the hotel reception without any problems. Entry was easy. The staff very friendly and helpful. Easy communication in English. A breathtaking backdrop of Art Nouveau houses awaited us. Very informative historical pictures and explanations. The individual rooms and facilities are placed around a green courtyard. The design of the facades and roofs is breathtakingly beautiful. You can linger here in peace and quiet and pursue your thoughts. After all, it is a former hospital and once there were sick people for treatment. However, the backdrop already suggests many positive approaches to the desired care and recovery.
