Full description
Enter either the De Kat or the Het Jonge Schaep and get to see how these windmills work from the inside. The windmill 'Jonge Schaap' (Young Sheep) was made the saw wood into planks for e.g. ships and the famous wooden houses in de Zaanstreek region. Find out how the mill saws a tree into a plank. This only requires wind and a little help from the miller. Explanations are provided and you can even ask questions to a real Dutch miller.  Learn more about the history of the famous Dutch windmills at an exhibition in the basement of the mill. There are plenty of opportunities to take pictures of the windmill. From the high platform you have a beautiful view of the polders and all the other windmills. Or come inside the last remaining still working paint windmill in the world, dated 1782. This windmill grinds a variety of natural dyes and pigments as well as tropical hardwoods. These woods are used to dye wool and other fibres and the pigments are used to make your own paint such as oilpaint, waterpaint or egg tempera. During your visit to the paint mill you can follow the grinding process if there is enough wind of course. The mill grinds chalk under the large couple grind stones. The pair of grind stones together weighs 6000 KG and is driven by the wind only. In the “Red room”, natural pigments, such as omber, ochre and siena are ground. In the back of the mill  the loggers stands, where tropical wood is chopped. Look at the impressive working wooden interior of this "old" industrial factory.
