Embark on a unique 2-/3- hour walking tour of the authentic Dutch village Zaandijk, directly next to Zaanse Schans. Visit a number of the village's picturesque monuments and windmills and stop off in a Dutch home for coffee and homemade Dutch apple tart.
What to Expect
Enjoy a unique walking tour of Zaandijk, an authentic historic village the lies only a few kilometers from Amsterdam and directly across the river from the famous open-air museum Zaanse Schans. Your guide will take you along a picturesque route pointing out the beautiful monuments, authentic windmills, and an ancient lock. You will also get the opportunity to visit an authentic Dutch home.
The tour starts at the Koog-Zaandijk station, a mere 20 minutes train ride from Amsterdam Central Station, where your guide will meet you.
The first attraction along the walk is an operational windmill used to grind oil from linseed. Next meander through the prettiest park in the area, Kooger Park, with its historic bandstand and artwork. Continue on to another windmill, the intimidating Bleeke Dood or "Bleak Death." This windmill is also operational and grinds grains to various flours, sold on site at the old millshop.
About halfway make a welcome pitstop "at home" with a visit to a real Dutch home where you will be spoilt with a freshly made coffee or tea and a piece of homemade Dutch apple tart.
The second half of the tour takes a more historic leaning. The Donimeestuin area consists of authentic and reconstructed 17th century wooden houses. To this day this area is inhabited by locals. Pass the old lock built in 1727 and enjoy a spectacular view of the Zaanse Schans. The rest of the tour will include a number of monuments, as well as a museum and the old town hall.
The tour ends in front of the Zaanse Schans where your guide will leave you to explore the area at your own leisure and shop for souvenirs.
