Visit some of the Yucatan’s popular sites on a day trip from Mérida. Explore the archeological site at Dzibilchaltun, one of the most impressive Mayan astronomical centers. Admire pink flamingoes in Uaymitun, and experience authentic Mexico in Progreso.
What to Expect
Dzibilchaltun is one of the most impressive Mayan astronomical centers unearthed to date. Visit this archeological site on a full-day trip from Mérida, and see its cenote (underground river) as well.
You’ll make a stop at the parador turistico of Uaymitun to see the famous pink flamingos and other birds before continuing on the port of Progreso.
Dzibilchaltún is located in the Mexican state of Yucatan, about 17 miles north of the historical city of Mérida. The most famous structure at the Mayan site is the Temple of the 7 Dolls, so named because of 7 small effigies found at the site when the temple was discovered by archaeologists in the 1950s.
At the time of the spring equinox, the rising sun shines through the temple, passing directly through one window and out of a window on the opposite side.
Later you’ll visit Progreso de Castro, named in honor of its founder, Juan Miguel Castro. This is the main port in Yucatan, and is considered to be a quintessentially Mexican town.
