Overview
Enjoy the North Yorkshire Moors and Whitby on this day tour from York. Visit Goathland, Helmsley, Pickering and Rosedale Abbey. With time to explore Whitby during lunch, this is the ideal tour to see the highlights of the North Yorkshire Moors.
What to Expect
Leaving York, you will make your way to the charming town of Pickering, the southern terminus of the North York Moors Railway, known as the ‘Gateway to the Moors’. There will be a brief chance to explore the station and see this picturesque market town. Then head into the North Yorkshire Moors National Park, where there will be plenty of chances throughout your day to capture memorable photos.

Arrive in Goathland, a scenic moorland village. The village is the main setting, Aidensfield, in the 60s TV series Heartbeat. You will also have an opportunity to see Goathland Station, which was turned into Hogsmeade in Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. The shop on the platform was transformed into the Prefect’s Room and the ladies' toilets became the Wizard’s Room.

Then drive through more classic Yorkshire countryside to Egton and Egton Bridge, and then down the famous 33% Gradient on Limber Hill. The journey takes you on to Glaisdale, a peaceful village which is home to Beggars Bridge, a 17th century bridge with a romantic story behind it.

Lealholm is a perfect stop for lunch, with a number of delightful tea rooms and food options. The Sunday Times recently described Lealholm as "the prettiest village in Yorkshire". The River Esk runs through the centre of the village, with its picturesque stepping stones, providing hours of fun for generations of children.

Get onto the heart of the moors in the afternoon. On leaving Lealholm head to the moorlands, to enjoy uninterrupted panoramic views for miles, whilst travelling over the grouse moors. After passing through Rosedale Abbey, stop to view the historic furnaces.

Arriving in Hutton-le-Hole, a picture-perfect village situated within Ryedale, you may even get a photo opportunity of the sheep grazing in the village. As the tour makes its way out of the national park you will stop at the market town of Helmsley, with time to explore the bustling market square, the dramatic castle ruins, the charming tea rooms and the inviting inns. Finally the tour will head back towards York.
