Who is buried in Westminster Abbey?

In the heart of London, one of England's most famous churches is not only the location of national events - perhaps most recently, the Royal Wedding - but also the burial ground of some of the country's key historical figures.

Saebert of Essex

England's heritage is rich with Saxon influences. Saebert ruled in the 6th century and is celebrated as one of the first kings to convert from pagan religions to Christianity.

Queen Elizabeth I

Her reign spanned the Anglo-Spanish war and English settlement in the Americas, but she is also known for ordering the execution of her cousin, Queen Mary of Scotland.

Charles Dickens

Dickens was the author of A Christmas Carol, Oliver Twist, and Great Expectations - works which have created cultural ripples in TV and film.

Sir Isaac Newton

Sir Newton, who studied at Cambridge, is famous for discovering gravity when an apple fell on his head from a tree.

Henry VII and Elizabeth of York

The father of the notorious Henry VIII has his very own chapel area and is buried next to his wife. Their tomb is luxurious, gold, and in Renaissance style to reflect their wealth.

Westminster Abbey: Our Tips

Photography not allowed

Photography is not permitted in the church area, only in the cloisters. There will be clear guidance as to where these areas are - if in doubt, ask someone who works there.

Even if they are not physically buried at the Abbey, there are many memorial stones to famous influencers - among them the Bronte sisters, Martin Luther King, Jr., and William Shakespeare.

Dress code

As it is a church, visitors are asked to take care in how they dress when visiting Westminster Abbey - no hats and knees and shoulders covered.

Large luggage items can't be brought inside the building - it is recommended that you check them into the secure storage facilities at one of London's major rail stations.

perfect tour for kids and fun for adults, too

Me and my 7-year old son enjoyed Julias tour very much. I actually liked it a lot better then most tours for adults. Lots of interesting and detailed facts, that Anton is still talking about, now we are back in Berlin.

Entertaining, informative, full of atmosphere

We very much enjoyed the Tour - despite the frost! The walk by itself is a nice tour past some of Londons sights. The haunted places and it's stories are very interesting and inspire to find out more. Our guide was entertaining and attentive, he made the walk fun!

Tom was very informative but fun in the way he put things across

Be prepared to wrap up very warmly - it was a cold night but added to the overall spookiness of walking in the parks and around the city. Well worth the ticket price to have the expertise of Tom as our guide - he kept things moving but took time to give detailed explanations.
