What to Expect
Located approximately 50 miles (80 kilometers) from Vilnius, the Open-Air Folk Life Museum of Rumsiskes offers a unique chance to learn about rural life in Lithuania on a leisurely day trip from the city center.
Traveling by air-conditioned vehicle, with an English-speaking guide, you will drive to the Kaunas Reservoir, where the village of farmsteads that reflect the various regions of Lithuania have been built.
En route, your guide will tell you more about the history and culture of Lithuania. Then, explore the 4 ethnic areas of the nation as they appeared 100 years ago. The museum displays about 88,000 exhibits. Some of the houses and implements were moved intact from their original locations.
In the summer months you may even see workers in the fields dressed in original costumes, and children singing songs while weaving wreaths of flowers, while folklore and ethnographic concerts and traditional festivals enliven the exposition.
