Venice might be better known for its canals, but don't forget to explore its winding streets for what many might consider a local's perspective. Here are five fun facts to bear in mind.
Venetian houses tend to face the canal, so many of its haphazard streets arose simply as gaps between buildings. The narrowest is Ramo Varisco, at only 53cm wide!
Venice's church towers, or "campanili," do more than just sound the hour - they've historically also been used as lighthouses and fire guard stations.
Despite having over 400 gondoliers in a tradition that dates back centuries, Venice didn't get a female gondolier until 2010!
Visit the Palazzo Loredan to see the birthplace of Elena Lucrezia Cornaro Piscopia, who, in 1678, received a Doctorate in Philosophy from the University of Padua.
Walking tours are a great way to see the city, but it wouldn't be Venice without a ride along the city's canals. Fortunately there are several walking and gondola tour combination packages to choose from, with prices starting from €43.
If you're visiting Venice on the cheap then you might choose to opt for a free walking tour. Perhaps unsurprisingly, there is a catch! Remember your guide does this for a living so bring some cash in order to pay what you think it was worth at the end. If you don't, be prepared to shuffle away sheepishly!

Our guide was fantastic! She was so interested in art and so talented in her presentation… it was truly an amazing experience. Our tour took place outside-due to Covid-19 regulations- but when we entered the museum it felt like we knew all the details of the building and the art work! Great guide, on time, with information you can’t find in mainstream books. We are a family of 4 and we all enjoyed our visit. Highly recommended! Thank you
The guide (Lorenzo) was very knowledgeable and friendly. I really enjoyed learning from him all the interesting things about Venice and he customized the tour to what I was interested in (lucky for me I was the only guest). And he even helped make a reservation at an excellent restaurant. I learned a lot about Venice and had amazing food.
Our guide Silvia was excellent! We had very interesting guide tour in San Marko Basiliq and Dodge house, 3 hours together with Silvia passed as few minutes! Guide lines were personalised for us, presented in very interesting way and paid attention to everyone interest! Highly appreciate guide Silvia profesionality and the way of guiding!
Great tour! Loved it but it needs to be more clear on how to get to the meeting point or the best way from your location. We missed our morning tour but found it and we’re able to reschedule and catch the next one.
Our guide Silvia was knowledgeable, genuine, and very engaging. We thoroughly enjoyed our tour and learned a lot about Venice. It was really a wonderful experience and would recommend it in a heartbeat.
