What to Expect
St. Mark’s Basilica is surely one of the most famous and visited attractions in Venice. Not everyone knows about the fascinating Cloister of St. Apollonia, however, a precious treasure located not far from the Basilica. On this 1-hour guided tour you’ll visit both, and your guide will tell you about their history and importance.

Enter St. Mark’s Basilica skipping the lines at the entrance, and lose yourself in the magical atmosphere of this church. After taking a comfortable seat in the middle of the central nave, you’ll hear the story of the Basilica’s long and tormented construction and how it became the Cathedral of Venice.

Admire the 13th-century mosaics that adorn the dome, and then the Treasury and the Golden Pall. Your guide will tell you about the Treasury’s rich history and why it is considered one of the most important collections of sacred art in Italy.

The most important jewel in the collection is surely the Pala d’Oro, specifically forged for the Basilica. Its creation, from gold, silver, precious stones, and enamel, took nearly 4 centuries of work and was finally completed in the 14th century.

At the end of the guided tour of the Basilica you’ll be escorted to the Rectory, where your guide will lead you down an exclusive hallway that connects St. Mark’s Basilica to the Rectory Bridge and Foundation with direct access to the fascinating Cloister of St. Apollonia. You’ll enjoy a view of the famous Bridge of Sighs on the way.

The Cloister of St. Apollonia is located on the site of a former Benedictine monastery that now houses the Diocesan Museum of Sacred Art, the Marciano Lapidary, and the Historical Patriarchal Archive. Note the Romanesque elements of the Cloister, typical of the nearby mainland and not normally found in Venice.

You’ll see the Marciano Lapidary, an important collection of decorative fragments that used to adorn St. Mark’s Basilica. The 13th-century wellhead, located at the center of the Cloister, and the flooring in its 12th-century brick herringbone pattern, are 2 of the remarkable elements your guide will point out during your visit.
