What You'll Do
  • Meet the Masters Titian, Tintoretto and Bellini
  • Learn about Italian art through the centuries
  • Visit the Suola of San Giovanni Evangelist
Overview
On this private walking tour of Venice, explore the lives and works of two of the major artists of the Venetian High Renaissance: Titian and Tintoretto. Get to know their art up close while you learn about the social history of Venice.
What to Expect
This 3-hour private walking tour will give you a striking glimpse into Venetian art and its integral role in the public life of the city. You will come away from this tour with an appreciation for the masters of the Venetian Renaissance—Titian, Tintoretto, Bellini—and a greater understanding for how these works were meant to be viewed in context.

Part of the beauty of Venice is its wealth of art still in-situ. During this tour, your guide will focus on the churches and scuole of the San Polo sestiere. We will spend a significant amount of time examining Tintoretto's artwork here, both in terms of style and in the context of the confraternity.

At the Chiesa dei Frari, built by the Franciscans, learn about the importance of artistic commissions in the life of Renaissance Venetians as you gain insight into this microcosm of Venetian art and history from the 14th century onwards.

In the church, see two important altarpieces by Titian, The Assumption of Mary and the Madonna of Ca' Pesaro, as well as works by Bellini and Donatello. Here, you will also be able to compare and contrast the work of Titian with his forefather, Giovanni Bellini.

As you view the many works of art on this tour, your guide will teach you about the social history of Venice, including the role of the scuole in Venetian life, the effects of the plague, and the competition between artists for important commissions.

Meeting Point

Your docent will meet you in front of Caffè dei Frari, which is located at 2564 San Polo (Fondamenta dei Frari). Although you are prepaid for the walk, you are responsible for purchasing entrance tickets to any churches that require it the day of the walk (Scuola di San Rocco, 7 euros and Chiesa dei Frari 3 euros). Given the complicated nature of transportation and city navigation in Venice, we suggest allowing yourselves more time than you feel necessary to arrive at the meeting point.

Know Before You Go
If you are traveling between November and March, there is a chance you will experience Venice's famous acqua alta (high waters). Prepare yourself by bringing along rubber boots!

You will visit several churches on this tour. Shoulders should be covered, and shorts and skirts should not come more than 1 inch above the knee.

Context walks can be canceled up to 48 hours prior to the walk with an 85% refund. Within 48 hours all reservations are final and cannot be refunded. Walks are held rain or shine with some variations to accommodate the weather. If you are running late for your meeting with our docent, please call the tour operator.

No-shows are treated as last-minute cancellations and are non-refundable. Cancellations within 2 business days need to be made directly with the local offices by calling them directly (or the emergency number provided). Cancellations made via email or by calling the U.S. 800 number may not be honored.
