Utrecht is one of the most charming cities of the Netherlands. Discover the fascinating history of Utrecht and its corners, with the help of your local guide.
What to Expect
When you visit Utrecht, you have to visit the Dom Tower. The highest and oldest church tower in Holland is Utrecht's main landmark. The Dom Tower was built between 1321 and 1382 and is 112 meters high. It offers an excellent view of Utrecht and the surrounding area, but before you can enjoy the view you first have to climb 465 stairs! On a clear day, you can see the church steeples of Amersfoort, Rhenen, Montfoort, Oudewater, Woerden and even Amsterdam from the top of the tower.
The Dom Tower became separated from the cathedral after a tornado struck the church in 1647. Combine your visit to the Dom Tower with the cathedral and be amazed by the French Gothic style, 15th century wall paintings and medieval courtyard. Do not forget to visit the impressive Utrecht's Gothic cathedral!
Utrecht is a city where you can visit a market every day of the week. The center of the city is host to three large markets: the Lapjesmarkt (fabric market), the Bloemenmarkt (flower market) and the large general market held at Vredenburg. Explore Utrecht from the water and you will be treated to an entirely different view. See the historic facades of wharf side houses, sculpted tableaux, and all kinds of impressive trees along the canals, some of which are over 200 years old!
