Volcano trekking has become very popular for the sunrise view at the top of Mount Batur. For this activity you will be picked up from your hotel at 2.00 am, as the trekking starts at 4.00 am, to catch the sunrise at the top of the mountain.
What to Expect
Mount Batur is an active volcano located at the center of two concentric calderas north west of Mount Agung on the island of Bali, Indonesia. The south east side of the larger 10×13 km caldera contains a caldera lake. The inner 7.5 kilometer-wide caldera, which was formed during emplacement of the Bali (or Ubud) ignimbrite, has been dated at about 23,670 and 28,500 years ago. The first documented eruption was in 1804 and the most recent was in 2000.
There is a reason the sunrise trek to the summit of Mt.Batur (1,717 meters) is so popular. Besides experiencing the awesome beauty of an active volcano, trekking in the cool, early morning darkness obscures the difficulty of the challenging hike (torches, hiking sticks and wet weather gear supplied, if needed). The dark also helps walkers to focus and climb the one to two hour ascent making it feel less difficult. The bonus is arriving in time to witness a glorious sunrise and experience the stunning morning views of the surrounding crater and lake.
