We visited Toledo, the long-time capital of Spain, on a perfect day. We took the train station from Madrid from the Atoche Station at 9:20 and our guide met us at the train station at 9:53. Buy your tickets on line and even though you may not know your return time, you can always exchange your ticket for an earlier (but not later) departure. The cathedral is stunningly beautiful with unique art and history. The Jewish section of town is interesting as well, with but two remaining synagogues, one with Moorish architecture, the other with a comprehensive history of Judaism in general and in Spain specifically. Our guide took us into the basement of a Jewish home with a hidden Mikvah which we suspect was used by Marranos. We ended with El Greco's "Burial of the Count of Orgaz", surely his greatest painting. The guide also gave us a great recommendation for lunch, and after wandering for another couple hours we returned to Madrid at 5:30. Our best day in Spain.
This tour is not a substitute tot walking round the town. We did not know what to expect but the tour took us on a route outside and all round the old town with such wonderful vistas over town and the river with its buildings and bridges that could never be seen from inside the town. We were on the top deck where it was noisier and the commentary over the earphones were hard to comprehend. The opportunities to hop off at interesting places and hop back on again requires plenty of time and some homework beforehand to make the best of this facility. Best places are at bridges where one can wander into the town for refreshments. On a Saturday we found two buses doing the trip with a waiting time between of some 20 minutes.
Once we got on the bus it was great , giving us a good overview of Toledo , but we had great deal of trouble turning our online voucher into a ticket, it took two bus drivers plus a 3rd member of their staff to resolve the problems , better to print the voucher or better still buy the ticket on the day. There was no line but it took almost 30minutes to obtain our tickets The Alcazer is a must when you visit Toledo , we are not into military museums ,but the Alcazer is so much more , The walking tour was very informative giving a good insite into the history of Toledo , our guide was great , we were lucky as we were the only 2 on the tour.
Alejandro was a fabulous tour guide, very knowledgeable on the history of the Cathedral and on the City of Toledo, as he was born there. Truly an outstanding guide. Our bus driver, Raphael, was also excellent. I will most certainly book tours with your company again. Thank you for your service!
Even though you must walk through out the city to view the sites the bus is great to view the city as a whole. Walking the city is extremely tiring because of all the hills you have to walk. A nice bus ride around the city is great to catch your breath and enjoy the views.
