What You'll Do
  • Learn Zen Buddhism from a monk
  • Try out Zen meditation, and see a brief ceremony
  • Enjoy tea after the ceremony
A Japanese Zen monk of the Soto branch of Zen will perform a blessing ceremony and teach a class in basic Zen meditation and relaxation techniques. Beginners and all levels welcome. Tea served.
What to Expect
Zen Buddhism has had a huge influence on Japanese culture and remains popular today throughout the world as a means of self-understanding and peace. This tour offers the opportunity to try out Zen meditation in a friendly, small-group non-religious setting in an attractive workshop space, located within a few subway stops of major tourist areas Ueno and Asakusa. Beginners and all levels of experience are welcome as are believers of all faiths and philosophies.

A Japanese Zen monk of the Soto-shu branch of Zen will first perform a brief ceremony blessing the participants, which also helps clear the mind and focus attention. Each participant will receive an amulet from the ceremony. Then the monk will teach some simple relaxation techniques, useful for preparation to meditate.

The monk will then demonstrate Zen meditation and lead participants in a short Zen meditation session. The group will sit cross-legged on meditation cushions on the floor, but it is not at all required to sit in true full- or half-lotus position. Chairs are available as well. Please dress appropriately.

After the meditation, simple tea will be served, and there will be time for a few questions. English interpreting is provided for the entire session. This experience can help you better understand Japan and even perhaps help you understand yourself a bit better as well.
