What to Expect
Tokyo Cultural Experience - Shinjuku Pub Crawl
Shinjuku has a variety of interesting aspects such as Tokyo Metropolitan Government and the gay district.
The Pub-crawl starts around 3.30 pm - 4.00 pm. You will meet your guide at your hotel around 3.00 pm.
The first destination is "Omoide-Yokocho".
Omoide-Yokocho is located at Shinjuku station west gate area. The history of this little shopping street goes back to the immediate post-war years. Around 1946, the district was a devastated land covered by wreckage. There used to be stalls selling clothes and shoes, for example, and 30 to 40 booths sheltered with reed screens selling oden (various materials cooked in Japanese style broth), boiled potatoes, boiled red beans, tempura, tsukudani (seaweed boiled in soy sauce), and used books. However, everything was completely destructed by fire.
After the disaster, “Lucky Street”, a black market, consisting of stalls divided by boards, appeared during the controlled economy era. Even during this war time, the population of this district decreased merely 10%, because there were houses sheltering families who escaped from their homes and evacuated to their relatives living in Setagaya, Suginami, and Nerima. Shinjuku was a train point of those areas, and functioned as a terminal for transiting people and distributing supplies. People started to run their own businesses. Even now, the majority of the shops are built tightly, right next to each other. “Omoide-Yokocho" has continued to develop with reasonable prices, and warm hospitality.
Your next destination is "Robot Restaurant" in Shinjuku Kabuki-cho.
Constructed with a hefty price of 10 billion yen, Robot Restaurant is where gigantic robots and acrobatic female dancers perform wild raving dances right in front of your eyes, literally. Feel free to take photos and even pose with the robots in this chaotically fun venue where everything is alive with neon lights. The restaurant is the newest must-see spot in the Kabuki Cho district, attracting visitors from around the world, including some adventurous celebrities.
Next, you'll enjoy "Izakaya" - a Japanese style pub
Izakaya is similar to the idea of Spanish tapas. You order drinks and dishes. Common Izakaya foods are Yakitori, Sashimi, tofu, salad and grilled fish. They come in small portions you can share. The menu often has pictures but the guide will explain and recommend what would be good to order.
Finally, you will visit Golden Gai.
"Golde Gai" is a small area famous both as an area of architectural interest and for its nightlife. It is composed of a network of six narrow alleys, connected by even narrower passageways which are just about wide enough for a single person to pass through. Over 200 tiny shanty-style bars, clubs and eateries are squeezed into this area.
