Take yourself out of the city and into the mountains with this full-day tour to Nikko, Japan. Visit the mausoleums of the Tokugawa shoguns. Step into Japan's imperial past at the Tamozawa Villa and end the day at the spectacular Kirifuri Falls.
What to Expect
Leave the hustle and bustle of Tokyo and explore the mountain city of Nikko, Japan. Located approximately 140 km north of the capital, this is a must-see destination both for its cultural heritage as well as its magnificent scenery.
The tour will begin at the Toshogu Shrine. Constructed by the followers of the Shinto faith, Japan's native religion, it is dedicated to the kami (spirit) of Ieyasu, who founded Tokugawa Shogunate, a military dynasty that ruled Japan from 1603 to 1867.
Crafted over 2 years, using 15,000 craftsmen and 2.5 million sheets of gold leaf, it is unlike most Shinto shrines, which are normally recognized for their minimalist appearance. Toshogu is bursting with color, gold carvings, and elaborate depictions. One of the most famous sections of the shrine is the Sacred Stable; here you will find the original carving of the three wise monkeys: "Hear no evil, speak no evil, see no evil."
Next up is a trip to the Tamozawa Imperial Villa. Erected in 1899, the villa blends Edo, Meiji, and Taisho period architecture, and remains one of Japan's largest wooden structures. Search through its 106 rooms and explore the remnants of its illustrious past. Surrounding the residence and hiding within its courtyards is a beautifully manicured Japanese garden, especially remarkable in the autumn months.
Finish off the day with a visit to the awe-inspiring Kirifuri Falls. Standing at 75 meters tall, it is considered one of Nikko's most beautiful waterfalls.
