Inside the Thrihnukagigur Volcano: Day Trip from Reykjavik
- Transportation included
- Duration: 6 hours
We had misfortune to visit the volcano on worst day of this summer, so all the later groups were cancelled. Unfortunate weather disturbed a full experience of this trip, however added real adventure feel to it. Strong wind and rain were against us and we got soaked however feeling of making a large achievement was enhanced by it. I did not catch all the names, Sole and Ole were amongst them, but all the guides were great and reassured us that in spite of heavy wind we were safe. After a short bus ride you come to a first house - or a camp - with toilet facilities and we were provided rain overcoats, which would sustain normal rain but could not what we experienced. After that, a walk of some 40-45 minutes to the base camp in the foot of the volcano. It is not too dificult, with just a few short uphill and downhill segments. You’ll get some warm refreshment, imstructions and safety gear in base camp and final climb follows, some 3-5 minutes of somewhat steeper climbing.
This experience is certainly worthwhile and not to be missed. The guides were extremely kind, knowledgeable, fun, and helpful, too. I highly, highly recommend this tour. I, also, appreciated and enjoyed the soup afterwards and the option of tea, coffee, and/or hot chocolate before and after. For us, the weather was a bit wild the day we went. Fortunately, they gave us heavy duty rain coats. The only suggestion I would give to visitors is that, if there is rain, I would encourage wearing gaiters because, despite having waterproof pants and shoes and a long rain jacket, the wind still blew my pants around and water still got into my shoes to the point that I was pouring water out of my them (more than once). But hey! To me, all of this just added more adventure to the adventure. So, I didn’t mind at all. Overall, this a unique opportunity that is not to be missed! :)
One of the most wonderful and exciting experiences in my life. I had an amazing walking through the path to volcano, got an instructions how to go inside volcano and safety equipment, then after visiting volcano inside I got an amazing lamb soup with lots of coffee and sweets and got a souvenir bandana after it’s all.
Thoroughly enjoyed our experience. All the tour guides were friendly and knowledgeable. The weather was very windy with rain showers, they provided additional rain coats for everyone. The whole day run smoothly and to time.
To tell the people about the way to the cave and to let them know that you give the rain coats. To be more time inside- 15 minuts more. For such amount of money we deserve more time in the cave.
