Brutalist Tbilisi: Urban exploration and untold stories

Brutalist Tbilisi: Urban exploration and untold stories

This isn't your typical tour of charming balconies and tourist-friendly sights. Instead, we invite you to immerse yourself in the real, unvarnished Tbilisi, where locals live, work, and navigate the complexities of everyday life. This tour takes you off the beaten track and into the heart of the city's raw and authentic side. We'll take you through crowded, sometimes dimly lit neighborhoods that pulse with life, where the remnants of Tbilisi's Soviet past still stand tall in the form of iconic brutalist architecture. These are the areas untouched by mainstream tours, where the real stories of the city's history—its tragedies, challenges, and resilience—unfold. Meet your guide either at your hotel or a central location that is convenient for you and embark on your walking tour. Head to the Ministry of Highways of the Georgian SSR, a unique monument of Brutalist architecture. Then, visit the Georgian Stonehenge, a giant monumental building on the shores of the Tbilisi Sea. Next, explore the Nutsubidze Skybridge, built in the last century, where three apartment blocks are connected by a bridge. This unique structure offers a striking view of Tbilisi's residential areas. From there, we move on to the so-called Suicide Bridge, located above the River Vera. Despite efforts by City Hall to decorate the bridge, its story remains one of the darker chapters of Tbilisi’s history. You will also have the opportunity to ride in the old Soviet-era cable car. Finally, visit the former Museum of Archaeology, now an abandoned underground building that adds a haunting layer to the city's historical narrative. If you're looking for a tour about Stalin, this is not for you. We're here to tell the real stories of the people - their struggles and the painful moments that shaped the city's character. This experience is not for everyone - and we mean that. It's for those who seek the truth and are prepared to look beyond the polished veneer and confront the often difficult realities of Tbilisi's past and present. We are proud to say that this tour has won the National Tourism Award of Georgia, and part of the profits go to help internally displaced people (IDPs), making it an experience that gives back to the community. Small group tours run a few times a week and places are limited. Please book in advance for an enlightening and unexpected journey.

George was an amazing guide. I was the only one booked that day so I had a private tour. He explained a lot of Georgian history to me, and gave me information about the culture and religion. He also gave me enough time and space to walk around and admire the surroundings at each place. Also, his level of English was very good and I was able to understand. The vehicle was clean, well maintained and George drove carefully. The places visited are beautiful and 5 hours is a perfect amount of time to see everything. The departure time at 10am is not too early, so it allows you not to be rushed in the morning and still be back before dinner. George picked me up directly at my hotel and kept me informed of his arrival time via whatsapp. I recommend this tour without hesitation!

Our guide Zezva was very kind and entertaining. During 6 hours we were never bored for a minute, it felt like we were with one of our friends. His English was perfect so we did not have any difficulties in communicating. Also his knowledge about Tbilisi and Soviet architecture was perfect. He took some great pictures of us and gave cool photo ideas. He was a careful driver so it was so comfortable from the beginning to end. In short, that was a perfect tour beyond our expectations. It was more than just Soviet architecture tour so we recommend everyone to book it.

We had a really great time with George! He picked us up on time, was able to tell many interesting things and was very thoughtful. Highly recommended. P.S. Make sure to bring a hat or scarf in autumn/winter, since it can be very windy up there.

It’s my first time in the Tbilisi and Georgi is amazing in showcasing the details of the Old Town. He is passionate with what he does, and explained each detail of the tour very well. Definitely worth it!

Our experience was very pleasant and interesting, thanks to Khatuna, who answered all our questions with professionalism, making us appreciate the best stages of the route. Highly recommended!
