Learn to cook like a local at an intimate 3.5-hour small group cooking class in Thamel, Kathmandu. Slice, dice and prepare traditional “momos,” “dal bhat,” or “parathas,” and experience the cuisines of Tibet, Bhutan, Sikkim, Nepal, and Ladakh.
What to Expect
Discover the art of Nepalese food at a half-day, small group cooking class in Thamel, center of the tourist industry in Kathmandu.

First, go to the bazaar to source fresh ingredients with your Nepali chef. You can choose what you want to prepare, including delicacies such as momos, traditional to Tibet, Bhutan, Sikkim, Nepal, and Ladakh. One of the most popular fast foods in the region, it’s hard to estimate how many thousands are consumed everyday in Kathmandu. Momos can be made with a vegetable or meat filling, but the more adventurous also make them with chocolate, apple, and even ice-cream fillings.

When it's time to cook, start by preparing the ingredients according to the dish you’ve decided to make. You will have more or less responsibilities, from washing and cutting vegetables, to grinding chili in a mortar, stirring curry, and wrapping the momos. Take the time to smell and touch the ingredients for a full sensory experience!

Another popular dish you can master is dal bhat, a classic Nepali recipe and the staple diet of the majority of the population. It generally consists of dal (lentils), bhaat (rice), and a vegetable curry (saag), and is eaten by mixing the dal with the rice to form a soupy mixture, making a ball of the mixture with your hands, and adding curry and pickle.

Alternatively, learn how to make aloo paratha, originally made in a tandoor (clay oven). It can also be made at home, either pan-fried or baked in the oven. The home-made version may not be as soft as the tandoor, but it wont drip of butter or ghee, and is equally satisfying to the tummy.
