The Taj Mahal's Top 5 Architectural Features

One of the world's largest mausoleums, the Taj Mahal was completed in 1643 under Shah Jahan, who commissioned it in memory of his most beloved wife who died in childbirth. So what are the top architectural features you should watch out for?

Onion Dome

Perhaps the most distinguishing part of the Taj Mahal, this massive feature crowning the building is popular not only in Islamic architecture but also Russian Orthodox.

Minarets

The Taj Mahal is flanked by four tall minarets. In recent years, the Indian Archeological Society has expressed concern at the fact that they are beginning to tilt slightly!

Iwans

The iwans are the pointed arches at the sides. If you take a closer look, you'll see they are decorated with intricate Koranic calligraphy.

Wall Carvings

The awesome tessellating patterns and sweeping geometry covering the inner walls of the Taj Mahal are proof of the confluence of science and art.

Makrana White Marble

The Taj Mahal's white marble changes color with the time of day. Pastel pink or blue, dazzling white - if you spend the whole day there, you will experience the whole spectrum.

Taj Mahal: Our Tips

Dress code

Please remember that the Taj Mahal is an Islamic building. Although no specific dress code is enforced, it's best to dress modestly out of respect - this means covering knees and shoulders.

Early arrival

If you want to avoid the lines, it's best to arrive at the Taj Mahal at the crack of dawn. If you're not a morning lark, don't worry - this is one of the most beautiful times of day to view the monument and its gardens.

Luggage

Lockers are available, but please note that your bag is likely to be searched - no food is allowed to be brought into the Taj Mahal.

Agra

Although you might be stopping at the Taj Mahal via New Delhi, the nearby city of Agra is worth a visit, too. It's easy to combine your Taj Mahal trip with a tour to Akhbar's fort and the ghost town of Fatehpur Sikri.

What People Are Saying About Taj Mahal

Excellent tour. The best guided tour I have ever been on.

The Driver made a 120% effort to make us fee comfortable and speak our language to the best of his ability. He was very safe on the road and very hospitable. The drivers name was Sudama Rathore. I highly recommend using him. The guide was also very knowledgeable and friendly.

Umer from Maria tours was excellent guide.

I took the sunrise tour to the Taj Mahal and my driver Pradeep was on time and took me in his very clean vehicle. He was curteous and friendly. When we arrived at the Taj Mahal we met Umer who gave me a comprehensive tour of the the site. No detail was spared and he was attentive took photos and answered my many questions. He was knowledgable and kind. Then he took me to an ATM and out for a delicious lunch. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Maria tours and Umer as a guide in the future!!

Best trip of my life.. 2 Day Agra worth visit

I booked a 2 Day agra tour with the company and was happy with what they offered, the driver Rehman was good and spoke some good English (need to chat on long drives), he had a good way to drive the car through lanes. In Agra our guide was Ali, he was good at what is did too and had a big number of years at the travel business. I also visited Fatehpur Sikri which is worth visiting situated 40 kms away from Agra. Good service thumbs up for them, was able to cover almost all the monuments of Agra in 2 Days.

From the city of chaos to the city of love

I took this 2 day agra tour with my friends, we had a long drive from delhi to Agra and met with our guide who then took us to the ghost city we spent a while there and came to the hotel and had lunch there, later in the evening amir our driver took us to see the back side of the taj mahal and we loved the sunset view their. It was about time , we entered the taj next day during sunrise and was happy that it was not foggy and crowded. As we spent half the day more in the city and was happy the city was not at all like delhi where no one cared a bit about anything, the company owner met us that day while we were leaving and also provided us with some postcards. 5 star service
