What to Expect
Explore the historic monasteries of Saint Anthony and Saint Paul the Anchorite on a full-day tour of the Suez Governorate from Hurghada hotels.
Following a pick-up by air-conditioned vehicle, transfer to the Monastery of Saint Anthony (AD 361-3) hidden deep in the Red Sea Mountains. One of the oldest monasteries in the world, its construction marked the beginning of the monastic tradition.
According to legend, Anthony was orphaned at 18, and decided to dedicate his life to God, resulting in what the world now knows as Monasticism. His disciples built the magnificent monastery on the site of his grave, and it is now accessible to everyone who wants to appreciate the site's original features. Wander the interior to discover a complex of churches and gardens, including the Medieval Church of St. Anthony and the 12 domes of the Church of St. Mark the Ascetic.
Afterwards, you will visit the Monastery of Saint Paul (AD 228-348). Paul was a wealthy man from Alexandria who decided to retreat to the desert at the age of 16 to live for God. The Monastery is discretely hidden behind lofty walls. Once inside, see magnificent murals of the Virgin and Child, as well as beautiful chapels that contain scores of Icons.
