Explore Alexandria on a private 11-hour shore excursion from the cruise terminal of Sokhna Port, and discover one of the most beautiful cities in Egypt. Visit Montazah Palace, the Catacombs of Kom El Shoqafa, the Qaitbay Citadel, and more.
What to Expect
Avoid the large group shore excursions during your cruise ship’s port at Sokhna and take a full-day private tour of the historic city of Alexandria, traveling by air-conditioned vehicle.
Upon arrival in the city center, explore the “Pearl Of The Mediterranean Sea,” starting at Montazah Palace. Built by Abbas II, the last Khedive (Viceroy) of Egypt, around 1900, King Fuad I added the royal gardens and Al-Haramlik Palace in 1932 to serve as his summer residence.
Continue to the Catacombs of Kom El Shoqafa, which date back to the early Roman period. They were only discovered in 1900 after a search of about 12 years. Considered one of the 7 Wonders of the Middle Ages, one of the most gruesome features is the mass burial site of the Hall of Caracalla.
After lunch at a local restaurant, go to the 3rd-century Pompey's Pillar, and marvel at the 84-foot (25-meter) high red Aswan granite column, the last of the remaining relics of the Seraphium Temple.
Next, explore the Qaitbay Citadel at the entrance to Alexandria's eastern harbor, supposedly at the exact location of the famous Alexandria Lighthouse. Finally, go to the new Library of Alexandria, said to feature a copy of every book ever published. The great reading area alone can seat 2,000 people, making it one of the world’s greatest literary sites.
