Top 5 historical landmarks of Berlin, Germany

History is palpable in Berlin. The tumultuous past of Germany remains in the forefront of its citizens’ minds through monuments, memorials, and the few historic sites that weren’t bombed during WWII. Be sure to visit these five in the capital city.

Stasi Museum and Prison & The Berlin-Hohenschönhausen Memorial

You’ll have to head east for a deeper look into Soviet East Germany; these are some of the only landmarks that weren’t stormed by citizens after the fall of the Wall.

Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe

Completed in 2004, the holocaust memorial is considered to be one of the most harrowing of our time, representing a system of lost touch with humanity.

Brandenburg Gate

It was damaged during WWII, then hidden away between the East and West sides of the Berlin Wall. Restored and public, Germany’s most famous landmark is pure Prussian stateliness.

The Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church

Berliners call the Gedächtniskirche “The Hollow Tooth” because its spire was never reconstructed after WWII to serve as a reminder of war’s terrible destruction.

The Berlin Wall and Checkpoint Charlie

Small lengths of graffiti-covered giants remain of The Wall, that which divided Europe with its internal “death strip” from 1961 to 1989.

Excellent and enthusiastic guide made this very worth while.

I had miscalculated and as an old and overweight man this 'Walking tour' Was real tough for me. So when I say that this was a fascinating and engaging tour this is because the guide, the subject matter and the setting were all excellent. I strongly recomend.

Excellent! Interesting and very entaining

Of course you have to like history, and want to feel as if you were back in that time .. then you will love it. There was a couple of uninterested tourists in the group, I don't even understand WHY you would go on a 4 h tour if you're not interested in the topic, and just don't listen. Anyway we had a lot of fun and got to understand a lot. The guide was super responsive and knew answers to the weirdest questions we asked. Definitely he knew what he was talking about!
