Enjoy a fascinating day trip from St. Petersburg to the UNESCO World Heritage Site and historic city of Veliky Novgorod.
Once Russia's first capital and still considered one of its most ancient cities, Novgorod houses an inimitable variety of medieval monuments. Begin the day with a visit to Novgorod’s Kremlin, the oldest in Russia which dates back to 864 A.D. Walk along its monumental walls and admire the stunning cathedral of St. Sophia that dominates the Kremlin, before continuing the tour with a visit to the Cathedral of St. Nicholas in Yaroslav's Court.
After an optional lunch at a local restaurant, continue the afternoon with a visit to Yuriev Monastery, an 11th-century medieval religious complex built along the beautiful Volkov River. Then pay a visit to “Vitoslavlitsy," the open-air museum of wooden structures located close to the monastery, for an idea of how Novgorod’s inhabitants lived in the past.
At approximately 16:00, begin your return trip to St. Petersburg.
