Overview
Split is a town of ancient history, built and preserved over the course of 1700 years by its loving inhabitants. Embark on a walking tour of the Diocletian palace, the most precious cultural and historical monument in the city.
What to Expect
Diocletian Palace is one of the most significant original structures of the late ancient architecture, a kind of an Imperial Palace that was enlisted in UNESCO’s World Heritage in 1979. You will have a chance to see outstanding parts of it like Diocletian's cellars, main square Peristyle, the Emperor's private observatory Vestibul, the Mausoleum and St. Dominus’ Cathedral, Temple of Jupiter with the Baptistery, the Bronze, Silver, Golden and Iron Gates, Chapel of St. Arnir, the Town hall, Fruit square and many more.

At the beginning of the 4th century, the Roman Emperor Diocletian constructed this Palace in order to be his summer residence after retirement. He remained here until his death, after which the palace became home to various expelled emperors and common people, migrating through the area of Dalmatia, who decided to remain within the palace walls. As time passed by, more and more settlements were built within the palace and eventually the area expanded into an official town. Today Diocletian’s Palace is known as the only historical monument in the world within which people still live.
