Visit of the ruins of Pompeii, buried by the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 A.D. on this guided tour! Discover this famous excavated city first, then after lunch, continue with your driver on a panoramic tour of the wonderful city of Naples.
What to Expect
Today, you can visit the ruins of Pompeii, a city buried by the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 A.D.
At the time of the 79 A.D. eruption of Mount Vesuvius, Pompeii was a thriving Roman commercial port with 20,000 residents. Before the volcano blew a firestorm of molten ash its way, most of the inhabitants of Pompeii had evacuated. Those who chose to ignore the rumbling mountain’s warnings were stopped in their tracks, their silhouettes frozen in time and buried under tons of pumice and ash. Excavated in 1748, Pompeii is best known for the plaster casts of those silhouettes, and for lavish villas decorated with dazzling brightly colored frescoes and mosaics.
The site's testimony of just how modern life was in the ancient Roman town is equally striking. Extravagant bathrooms with sophisticated plumbing systems and heated floors, refined cooking utensils and even fast-food restaurants and graffiti all show how the ancient Pompeians were not as different from their modern descendants as one may imagine.
After lunch you will continue with your driver (without guide) for a panoramic tour of the wonderful city of Naples. See its enchanting highlights including Maschio Angoino, Castel Dell'Ovo, Plebiscito Square, the Royal Palace, the Cathedral and more.
The tour returns to Sorrento in the late afternoon.
