Full description
Enjoy a full-day trek into the Rila Mountains to explore the most picturesque area near Sofia and one of Bulgaria's most beautiful natural sites, the Seven Rila Lakes. This group of glacial lakes lies between 6,900 and 8,200 feet (2,100 and 2,500 meters) above sea level, surrounded by rugged peaks and deep valleys. Leaving from Sofia, you will drive for 90 minutes to reach the Panichishte resort area, where you board the chairlift to the Rila Lakes mountain hut. From here you will continue on foot to explore the landscape and its majestic blue pearls – the Eye, the Tear, the Kidney, the Twins, the Trefoil, the Fish Lake and the Lower Lake. The route is not difficult and can be altered on the spot depending on fitness levels or strength, following either more gentle routes or steeper gradients. Take your chance to explore the Blue Pearls of the Rila Mountains, the Seven Rila Lakes.

  • Hiking shoes

Know before you go

  • The weather in the region can be unpredictable, so please remember to bring warm clothes, sun lotion, sunglasses, a rain coat, a hat and comfortable shoes with good ankle support
  • Price for a return chairlift ticket is 20 leva (€10) per person
  • Kindly note, that availability of the tour depends on the weather conditions and the operation of the chairlift
  • The terrain will be very wet and slippery and there will still be snow in the area. Walking in such conditions requires adequate equipment (good trekking boots, waterproof clothes and a warm layer beneath the jacket). The hike is demanding, so a good fitness level is also required. Keep in mind that some of the lakes may be covered in snow
  • The tour can be canceled with a last minute notice (100% refund will be applied) due to harsh conditions or closure of the chairlift

It was really great, there were two of us and we had the chance to be alone with the guide. A magnificent excursion a soothing silence and great anecdotes about the place. It was cool but just enough not to die of heat, sporty walking but accessible to all levels.

1.Thank lot to our guide Peter who is a very good guide, knowledgeable, has sense of humor and very patient to the slow walkers 2.The walking part was harder then I've expected but very doable. Be prepared for climbing and don't give up. It's worth it 3.Even though the weather was very warm,on top of the mountains is very windy and chilly even on summer. So don't forget you jacket or even better a rain jacket for it can rain any time 4.Comfortable shoes is a must, snickers are not the best choice 5.My personal advice is to take some kind of spare bag for you waste because the nature there is beauuutiful and you don't want to befoul it 6.You meet at 7 a.m. and it's very early. Be ready to get up but you can take a nap for about 2 hours on the way to the mountains in the car And the most important thing is that the place you are going is amazingly beautiful, the view from the top of the mountain is breathtaking. You feel on top of the world Thanks a lot again to Peter and the company! :)

Spectacular hike with professional, insightful guide

This hike was a highlight of my trip to Bulgaria. The scenery was absolutely gorgeous. Trails were in good shape - pretty crowded up top. Our guide Petar was knowledgable, fun and professional. One thing to note is that there was an opportunity to fill water bottles on the trail - I would have brought fewer bottles if I had known. Overall a great excursion!
