What to Expect
Located along the banks of the Topolnitsa River in the Sredna Gora Mountain, Koprivshtitsa sits 3,477 feet (1,060 meters) above sea level. It lies 65 miles (110 kilometers) south-east of Sofia and is a town-museum with more than 250 preserved architectural monuments of the Bulgarian National Revival period.
On this full day excursion from Sofia you will get a fully guided tour of the buildings and charming houses. You will hear how the town originated and developed, and get a better understanding of life in Bulgaria in former years.
Go back to its foundation in the 14th-Century, after the fall of Bulgaria under Ottoman rule. Surrounded by a fertile valley, and at the crossroads of convoys and traders, many Bulgarians were attracted by the rich soil and natural resources and settled with their herds of cows and sheep.
The abundance of goods and money in the town attracted villains from afar, and at the beginning of the 19-Century Koprivshtitsa was pillaged and burned down 3 times. Despite this, the town flourished and was soon urbanized.
Spacious houses, bridges, fountains and churches were built. Gradually the town distinguished itself as a cultural and spiritual center, where key figures from the Bulgarian National Revival period - carriers of ideas for political freedom that left deep marks in Bulgarian history - grew up.
Explore Koprivshtitsa unique role in the preparation and onset of the April Rebellion of 1876, and in the Bulgarian National Liberation Movement in general.
