Full description
The Castle of the Moors was classified as a National Monument in 1910 and it also forms part of the Sintra Cultural Landscape classified by UNESCO as World Heritage Site in 1995. It soars 412 m above sea level and looms high above the surrounding forest.  The 10th-century Moorish castle’s dizzying ramparts stretch across the mountain ridges and past moss-clad boulders the size of small buses. The best walking route here from Sintra-Vila is not along the main road but the quicker, partly off-road route via Rua Marechal Saldanha. The steep trail is around 2 km, but quiet and rewarding.  Once you reach the castle, the views over Sintra’s palace-dotted hill, across to the glittering Atlantic are breathtaking. Along the walkways, you can admire the unique landscape that in the foreground features Sintra town and its town hall, the Palace of Pena and the hills. In the background, admire the extensive plain running northwards and the Atlantic Ocean.

We walked up the trail to the castle of the Moors and then over to Palace of Pena. Was not easy to find but once we did it is easily marked and not as hard as most reviews say it is. Lot of people of various levels of fitness were walking up. The trek over to Pena is an easy walk and well marked.

Ticket was easy to buy and use, tickets in Sintra are a bit expensive but they go towards keeping these old monuments in good shape for years to come. so it's worth it for that. The best thing and almost only thing about the Castle are the walls you can walk and climb. very nice varied views as the walls circle around a bit. much better then the High Cross at Pena for example. You can be in and out in an hour, so definitely worth adding it after your visit to Pena Palacr

I think the Castle of The Moors was the best part of our day trip to Sintra. The views were absolutely incredible and you could see so many of the other castles, there weren’t tremendously long queues and tons of people. The little food kiosk there is also really not badly price. Definitely recommend if you take a day trip to Sintra.
