Overview
Explore rural life in Cambodia on a guided tour of Tonle Sap Lake to visit the floating villages of Siem Reap. See floating schools, markets and the famous stilt houses. Visit the largest fresh water lake in South East Asia.
What to Expect
Tonle Sap is a flooded forest in Kompong and the biggest fresh water lake in Southeast Asia. One of the world’s most productive bodies of fresh water, during the wet season it swells to 4,600 square miles (12,000 square kilometers), while during the dry season it shrinks to as little as 965 square miles (2,500 square kilometers) and drains into the Tonle Sap River.

Each year, millions of fish come to spawn in the seasonally flooded forest surrounding the lake, attracting a myriad of water birds, as well as people who have settled in villages along the shores and who live by the rhythm of the water. UNESCO classified the remarkable ecosystem as a Biosphere Reserve in 1997.

On this full-day tour you will take a boat trip around the lake to see the floating villages. The flooded mangrove forest that surrounds the area is home to a variety of wildlife, including crab-eating macaques. Get a taste of local life, ruled by the monsoon rain and water-based agriculture.

You will then take the backroads back to town and witness seasonal agricultural activities, such as cricket catching, rice planting and harvesting, fish smoking, fish paste production (called prohoc in Khmer) and duck farming. You will visit a Buddhist monastery along the journey.

After lunch, take time to explore the famous Old Market of Psar Chaa. If you would like to return back to your hotel for a break during the day and then head out again in the late afternoon, that can be arranged.

Next, you will head to the National Silk Center. Pass rice paddies where buffalos graze. Enjoy a fascinating tour that provides an explanation of the breeding of Cambodian silk worms, the silk extraction process, and the creation of some of the most amazing silk items. The center also exhibits fantastic old looms, and traditional Khmer dance costumes.

Before you return to the hotel, you will visit the "Chantiers Ecoles Les Artisans D' Angkor,” a wood and stone caving center that provides training to young Cambodians in an effort to revive the ancient Khmer traditions of stone carving and wood sculpting.

As an added option, you can end your tour with a local buffet dinner and a performance of Khmer dancing, including the famous Apsara dance.
