  • Mount Etna: Cable Car, Jeep, & Hiking Tour to Summit

    1. Mount Etna: Cable Car, Jeep, & Hiking Tour to Summit

Ascend to the summit of the craters of Mount Etna, one of the most coveted excursions a hiker can make. Hike in full safety with an authorized alpine and volcano guide, and marvel at the beauty and wonder of the highest active volcano in Europe.   Depart from Sapienza Refuge in Nicolosi, and ascend 2,504 meters by cable car. Then, ride in a 4x4 Jeep up to 2,900 meters, to begin your hike. You’ll hike 1.5 hours uphill, passing many craters and taking long pauses to take pictures and rest.

Experience the incredible feeling of being on top of the world in this rocky, beautiful landscape with the giant sky above you. After reaching the summit, descend for 2 hours back to the cable car, which will take you to your departure point.

Unfortunately due to volcanic activity it wasnt allowed to hike to the summit. We got messaged about this a day in advance with an offer for an alternative past previous lava flows and craters, which we took. It still was a beautifull experience with a very friendly, experienced and knowledgeable, multi lingual guide. We didn't get to take the 4x4 bus because we were hiking on a lowere altidtude but got that refunded through get your guide.

I absolutely loved the tour! Our guide was super friendly, had great (English) communication skills and was very informative. As we needed to do a covid test (for our flight back home) in the early morning before the tour (pick-up 8.15/8.30h), our guide suggested we could come over to their second stop (to buy lunch before the tour) at 9.30h. We just made it with a taxi! The guide bought our lunch, because we payed for the taxi. Which was very kind of him! Also he has knowledge about (medicine) plants. This was awesome!

It was amazing, Luca was a great guide and I learned a lot about volcanos. We started out on 1900m and took the cablecar up to 2500m, where we started hiking up to ~3000m. The summit at 3300m cannot be climbed at the moment due to the Etna activity and code red. Luca led us through the dried lave streams and fields, some of which were still warm, and provided lots of information. He also showed us videos of recent Etna activity. The whole landsscape was mesmerising.

The boat was on the crowded side, but there was plenty of ventilation and the staff was vigilantly instructing guests to keep their masks in place. Alessio is an AMAZING Tour Leader! He has a wealth of knowledge about everything you'd ever want to know (if I recall correctly, he is basically a history professor) and he speaks English fluently/perfectly. The pick up/drop off is convenient and his transportation is great. I HIGHLY recommend his tours!! I wish I had more time in Sicily to take more day tours with him!
