Top 5 facts about the Sheikh Zayed Mosque

Opened in 2007, the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is Abu Dhabi's largest place of worship and the modern center of the city's religious life. Here's a little history worth knowing before your visit.

It's named after the UAE's first president

Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan is the man credited with uniting the emirates in 1971. He died in 2004, and was buried in the mosque's courtyard.

It was built to symbolize Islamic diversity

Sheikh Zayed was known as a tolerant leader. He saw the mosque as a unifying force and commissioned artisans and materials from across the globe to better realize his vision.

It's home to the world's largest chandelier

Built in Germany with Austrian crystals and Italian glasswork. The mosque also boasts the world's largest carpet. It was created by 1,300 Iranian artisans and weighs 35 tons!

It has a capacity of over 40,000

7,000 worshippers can fit inside the main prayer hall, but the mosque accommodates over 40,000 every Eid. But that's a far cry from Mecca's Masjid al-Haram, which can host 4 million!

Rihanna was kicked out!

While visiting in 2013, the singer dressed more conservatively than ever, but her pouting and posing for photographs was deemed "disrespectful" by staff and she was asked to leave.

Well planned tour with a good tour guide

Really well planned out day, and the guide was very passionate and clearly knowledgeable. He went beyond what was necessary with giving us info, so that was great. I will be recommending this tour. Only issue was it was very hot on the bus - it felt like just a cold fan not aircon.

Great way to see what Abu Dhabi has to offer.

We had a great day. Our guide Sami was terrific, he was very knowledgable about the places that we went. It was a great way to see the main attractions in Abu Dhabi. Our only advice to make this tour perfect would be to arrange time for a quick lunch as we were gone all day.
