What to Expect
Orthodox St. Catherine's Monastery at the foot of Mt. Sinai was built around a 4th-century chapel on the site where Moses is said to have encountered God in a burning bush. It is one of the two oldest, continuously active Christian monasteries in the world, the other being St. Anthony's Monastery south of Cairo.

Besides a shrub that is said to be a direct descend of the burning bush, a favorite subject for photographers, the 6th-century monastery houses priceless icons and mosaics. Its library likewise contains invaluable scrolls and manuscripts that impress even visitors whose main interests do not include religious history.

Your English-speaking guide is knowledgeable and able to answer any questions you have about the history of St. Catherine's and the site.

Lunch will be at a restaurant in the area of the monastery. You start the return trip mid-afternoon and stop in Dahab, where you can do some shopping.

A tour combining a visit to the monastery with a pre-dawn hike or camel ride up Mt. Sinai to see the sunrise is also offered.
