What to Expect
Explore one of the holiest sites in the world on this full-day excursion from Sharm El-Sheikh, and cross the Sinai Desert to St. Catherine’s Monastery in the remote city of the same name. Following a pick-up from your hotel by modern air-conditioned coach, drive across the arid desert to climb Moses Mountain.
Also known as Mount Horeb, the jagged mountain on the Sinai Peninsula towers to a peak of 7,497 feet (2,285 meters), and is the most widely accepted location of the biblical Mount Sinai. According to Bedouin tradition, it is here that God gave laws to the Israelites. In the 3rd century AD, it was settled by Orthodox Christians.
Next, go to the Monastery of St. Catherine at the foothills of the mountain. Built between 548 and 565, it is one of the oldest working Christian monasteries in the world, according to UNESCO. See beautiful icons of biblical figures, some dating back to the 5th or 6th century AD, and many more from the 12th and 13th centuries. Learn the legend of Saint Catherine, and how she was tortured to death for the sake of her faith, after she had converted hundreds of followers to Christianity.
