Your tour begins in New Zhenning Lu Market, where your guide will tell you about the tradition and history of Chinese food. You will also find out about how geography has influenced the development of Chinese cuisine. Learn about Guangdong traders, Anhui salt merchants, Fujian stevedores, and Ningbo’s missed opportunity to become eastern China’s major port city.
As you walk through the market, your guide will tell you about Chinese food traditions, such as the importance of sharing meals, the emphasis on freshness, and the role of texture in cooking. Learn about how Communism has affected China's food consumption and hear about the country's food scares.
Discover the role of pork in Chinese cuisine and learn fun facts about its significance today before going to dine at a local Shanghainese restaurant. See colonial-era architecture in a nearby villa and learn about the district before enjoying the cuisine of one of China's most interesting chefs, Tony Lu.
Your guide, who is a local chef or food writer, will inform you about Lu's impact on Chinese cuisine and will narrate the significance of the meal. The menu changes on each tour, but may include Xunyu, a recipe of smoked fish famous to Shanghai, a delicious red-braised pork belly, or a cold "drunken chicken," which is a specialty of nearby Shaoxing.

We will meet you at Ja Cafe, which is located across the street from the Jing-An Temple, which is located at the north gate of Jing-An Park in the middle of the city. We will be standing just outside, to the left of the entrance to the cafe. If it is raining, we'll be inside. Note that this is about 10 minutes from the market, so we will begin our walk with a little walk! However, this is a much clearer and easier-to-find meeting point than something closer to the market. If you are coming by taxi, please hand your driver these directions: 请带我去JA咖啡店，在静安寺对面，靠近静安公园北门。
Please wear comfortable walking shoes.
You will be required to pay for your own lunch at the restaurant when we arrive. The cost of the meal is 300 rmb per person.
Walks are held rain or shine with some variations to accommodate the weather. If you are running late for your meeting with our docent, we ask that you call to alert us so that we can relay the message to the docent. No shows are treated as last-minute cancelations and are non-refundable. Cancelations within 2 business days need to be made directly with our local offices by calling them directly (or on the emergency number provided). Cancelations made via email or by calling our U.S. 800 number may not be honored.
