What to Expect
Start this half-day tour of Shanghai’s design scene with an art history perspective at the Shanghai Museum, where a massive collection of precious Chinese classical works of art includes ancient Chinese bronze, ceramics, painting and calligraphy of high quality.

Next, go to the Old Town to explore the alleys and canals, and discover enticing culinary secrets, such as the best noodle shops, some of which have cult followings. Visit the Museum of Contemporary Art Shanghai, the first non-profit, independently-operated contemporary art institution in the city devoted to the promotion of Chinese and international contemporary art.

All of the guides are designers themselves, and they will organize an invitation to a privately-owned art museum run by archaeologist and art history lecturer, Pia Pierre. Pia’s exploration of the remote reaches of the Silk Road started in the early 1980s, inspiring the creation of Hong Merchant. Housed in a 1920s French Concession villa, the gallery displays carefully selected antique Chinese furniture and decorative pieces, alongside China-inspired contemporary art.

Finally, relax at the Tianzifang, a lifestyle hub with bars and boutique shops. You will drop in on some of the guide’s favorite designers, who can give you an insight to the increasingly sort-after local labels, and tips on everything from handmade shoes to the best tailors and dress makers in town. End with a refreshment at a perfect people-watching roof top café by the Yangtze River.
