Spend a beautiful day at the emerald waters of Königssee in the Berchtesgaden Alps of Bavaria. Departing Munich, you will drive along the most scenic German Alpine road into the marvelous valley of Berchtesgaden. Arrive at Königssee and take a boat ride to the peninsula. As you cruise, listen out for the mysterious echo of Königssee, created by the proximity of the sheer rock walls. You will also see the historic Eagle`s Nest viewpoint, a teahouse that was offered to Hitler on his 50th birthday. Look out too for the so-called Sleeping Witch silhouettes in the mountains. Back on dry land, visit the chapel of St. Bartholoma, dating from 1134 and located at the foot of Germany’s second highest mountain, the 8,900-foot (2,700-meter) high Watzmann. Walk to the final station at Salet, where a footpath leads to Lake Obersee. Enjoy the marvelous views of Germany´s highest waterfall at Röthbachfall. Return to Munich for a hotel drop-off. The entire length of this journey into a serene wilderness is 8-10 hours.

This personal customizable tour covers Bavaria's mountains, Adolf Hitler's former mountain home, Eagle’s Nest retreat, Nazi bunkers around Berchtesgaden and the Salt Mines.  After pickup from your Salzburg hotel, start your morning with a scenic drive, following an off-the-beaten-path route past the meadow where the opening scene of The Sound of Music was filmed. The road leads to one of the most beautiful viewpoints in Berchtesgaden and after a short photo stop here continue to the Obersalzberg Eagle’s Nest bus terminal. Here board a specially equipped mountain bus and experience a breathtaking ride up the four-mile (6.4 kilometers) road, negotiating a 27% incline up to a rocky plateau. Disembark the bus here and walk through the 406 foot (124 meters) tunnel to the original WWII brass elevator up to the Eagle’s Nest. Feel the palpable sense of history as the elevator carries you a further 406 feet (124 meters) through the heart of the Kehlstein mountain and straight into Hitler’s former lair. On arrival, take a fascinating tour of the building and afterward get some free time to enjoy the birdseye views and refreshments. Descend from the Obersalzberg toward the mountain town of Berchtesgaden. See the fortress-like system of underground bunker complexes that were built by the Nazis to be used as air-raid shelters, a military headquarters, and a possible last refuge for the Third Reich leaders. Having explored here, emerge back into the daylight and after a short walk, visit the grounds of Hitler’s now destroyed home, known as the Berghof. Continue to the salt mine, explore the underground world of a 500-year-old salt mine. Relax on a scenic return drive along the Königssee River to Salzburg, where your tour concludes with a drop off at your accommodation or chosen central location.

In the last little southeastern corner of Germany, surrounded by an amphitheatre of majestic mountains, is the King’s Lake, or Königsee. It sits at the heart of the Berchtesgaden National Park, Germany’s only alpine national park and a recognized UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. The 192 meters deep lake is therefore only navigated by electrical boats that have operated here for more than 100 years, thanks to Prince-Regent Luitpold of Bavaria, who was afraid the noise would scare away the deer he so liked to hunt here in the 19th century. We should forget that the almost vertical walls of the mountains here cause an echo that can be heard over 7 times. During our visit, you will hear said echo, but no longer caused by the king’s rifle but by the boatmen’s trumpet, reverberating over the mountains all the way to Austria. Let’s embark on a pure romantic journey over the Kings Lake, to see the St. Bartholomä peninsula just behind the east wall of the Watzmann mountain and where the kings had their hunting lodge, to see the Röthbach waterfall the highest of its kind of Germany with its over 400 meters of height, and then to the Cul-de-sac border of Austria.

Disembark from the boat and take a fascinating tour of the Salt Mine (own expense). Admire other attractions in the area including the Obersee lake with its reflection of the Hagen Mountain Range, and the Röthbach waterfall, Germany's largest.

Old town Berchtesgaden was formed around the Collegiate Church of St Peter and St Paul were built in 1102, which is 54 years before they even started mining salt here. The church was later expanded into a royal palace which grew to have 214 rooms! The quaint village saw a building boom in Old Town start in the 1500s starting with a remodeled Market Square (Marktplatz). Market Square became the center of commerce and social life in Berchtesgaden and many of the colorful buildings still survive today. Every Friday from 8am-Noon there is a large local farmers market set up in the square because you can’t be called Market square without a market! A day trip to Berchtesgaden and Königssee offers the opportunity to explore the natural beauty of the Bavarian Alps. Or via Castle Linderhof, Abbey Ettal, Oberammmergau (with opt. Alpine Coaster). DAY 2 (It's possible to add DAY 2 itenrary to DAY 1 on the same day): Augsburg, Donauwörth, Harburg, Nördlingen, Dinkelsbühl, Rothenburg o. d. Taubern (overnight or back to Munich) DAY 3 (or only this day): Pick-up in Rothenburg (or Munich), drive to Eagles Nest (the last 20 minutes by special summit-bus), Hitler's tea house (now restaurant), Obersalzberg documentation center, Remains of Hitler residence. Berchtesgaden walk, Königssee (on request: by boat to picturesque Sankt Bartholomä church and to Germany's highest water fall).
