What People Are Saying About Sarlat-la-Canéda
would highly recommend this company. They were easy to contact once we arrive in Sarlat.
The three day tour is a great way to explore medieval cities, prehistoric caves and the beauty of the Dordogne area. Both guides we had were personable, well educated in their subject and enthusiastic. Small groups, ours were all under the 8 person limit, made it easier to move throughout the sites and for everyone to see and hear. When we were able to complete the normal tour early, the guide added an unscheduled stop instead of ending early. Can't say enough about the value they added. We did a couple sites on our own and it wasn't the same. Language issues were magnified but also we missed out on the history and detail that the guides had provided. Lunches and evenings were on our own and gave us ample time to explore Sarlat de Caneda, where we stayed, and a couple of the towns we visited.
Firstly, I must start by praising Marion, our guide, whose knowledge and enthusiasm made the day so special. We started with the cave paintings at Pech Merle and were astounded by the beauty of drawings that were almost 30,000 years old and yet seemed so fresh. It made you wonder about the dedication and determination of someone so long ago who must have overcome so many obstacles to record their view of part of their world. Then off to Saint Cirq Lapopie, a village that is lost in time. From early beginnings in the 8th and 9th centuries it now consists of a collection of medieval houses that appear like a film set - but a look at the stones and timbers that make up these buildings just reinforces their antiquity. Then to the medieval bridge at Cahors - I didn't know quite what to expect but the actual bridge is breathtaking - how such an immense construction could have been undertaken in the 13th/14th century with only limited construction equipment is hard to believe.
Our tour guide Florence was amazing and she took her time explaining the cave art with passion. She was on-time and provided a very informative overview of Lascaux & Rouffignac Caves. She used humor and local legends to make the experience a meaningful and memorable trip. I highly recommend this trip to anyone interested in prehistory cave art and French culture.
A fabulous day, everything we had hoped for. So informative and educational but never heavy. This has always been on my bucket list to visit, and we came to this area for this express purpose. I was not disappointed. Our guide was so knowledgeable and accommodating, fun to be with too. I would recommend this tour to anyone interested in art, history or archeology.
