Go off the beaten track on a full-day horseback riding tour through the mountains around Santiago. Mount your mountain horse and follow the local 'arrieros' (cowboys) through the spectacular landscape, enjoying a traditional Chilean lunch along the way.
What to Expect
Begin the day at your hotel, and enjoy a relaxing 30-minute drive into the rugged mountain range (known locally as the ‘cordillera’). After a brief safety training and some riding instruction, put on your chaps and mount your Criollo – a stout and hardy, long-distance horse breed known for its stamina in mountainous terrain – and embark on your mountain adventure.
Take in the magnificent scenery as you scale the mountain paths, and cross some streams along the way. Admire the breathtaking panoramas of Chile’s gorgeous natural surroundings, and learn about the horses, abundant bird life, and native flora and fauna from your local guide.
Continue the tour with a stop at an authentic 'arriero' (cowboy) ranch. Enjoy a welcome cup of coffee or try the famous mate – a traditional South American drink typically sipped from a gourd through a metal straw – while you feast on a picnic lunch of locally baked breads, seasonal fruits, fresh cheeses, cookies, and more.
