  • Be led by a local expert guide
  • Learn about the effects of the HIV/AIDS epidemic in the Castro
  • See landmarks including the Twin Peaks Tavern, Harvey Milk Plaza, Castro Theater, Human Rights Campaign
Full description
Start your tour near Twin Peaks Tavern, the first gay bar in the city to install floor to ceiling windows as a way to show its patrons were not ashamed of their identities. From that landmark bar, learn about the highs and lows of the struggle for civil rights and equality that the residents of the Castro have waged for over 40 years. Step on rainbow-colored crosswalks, cross the route of the Pride Parade and then stop at sights associated with Harvey Milk and the fight for marriage equality. Learn about long-running taboos by discussing the HIV/AIDS epidemic and see how the community has banded together to fight them. In doing so, you will learn about every aspect of the "Gayborhood," from the unsung local heroes to current ideas around inclusivity. This tour will give you a better idea of the impact that this famous neighborhood continues to have on American culture.

    Very insightful. Great guide.

This was a guide to the Key LGBTQ+ events that took place on the Castro. The guide tailored the information to match the needs and interests of the group and was insightful about the current political scene as well as the historical one. This was an important part of our trip to the Castro and one I would heartily recommend.
