What to Expect
Visit Ancient Rome's notorious Tiber Island, linked to the rest of the city by 2 bridges since antiquity, yet avoided because of the negative stories connected with it.

Legend has it that after the downfall of Tarquinius Superbus in 510 BC, angry citizens tossed the hated tyrant's corpse into the Tiber where it settled, attracting the dirt and silt that accumulated around it to form the island. Only the worst of criminals and the contagiously ill were condemned there. This changed following a great plague, when the Senate built a temple to Aesculapius, the Greek god of healing, on the island. With the spread of Christianity, the site was converted into a church.

San Nicola in Carcere (St. Nicholas in Prison) is unique in the way the imposing columns of an ancient temple have been incorporated into the church's side walls. Study the fascinating historic details of its interior, including an 8th-century engraving on preserved on one of the columns and the medieval tower's original bell.

From the crypt under the altar, descend underground to discover the once-open pathways once beaten by Ancient Romans on their way to and from the vegetable and cattle markets that once operated just a short walk away.
