What to Expect
Following pick-up from Civitavecchia cruise terminal by a private driver at 07:30, sit back and relax on the comfortable 90-minute drive to Rome. Drive a scenic highway through the countryside where the ancient Etruscans lived. Your driver will point out points of interest and answer any questions you may have along the way.
Then, experience the best of Rome's art and history at important sites. Get a magnificent view of the Colosseum, where between 50,000 and 80,000 spectators would gather to watch the bloodthirsty spectacles of the Roman Empire. Next, go to Capitoline to see the lowest and the least extensive of the "7 Hills of Rome" and discover the hub of political and religious activities in ancient times. Continue to Circus Maximus to see the ancient Roman circus in the valley between Palatine and Aventine hills.
Then, admire Rome's beautiful squares and picturesque alleys, starting with Piazza Navona, built on the ashes of the Stadium of Domitian. Today it's full of street and portrait artists. Look at the Fountain of the Four Rivers and beautiful Church of St. Agnes in Agony.
Walk to the Pantheon to admire the temple to the gods of Ancient Rome. Not only the best preserved monument from the Roman Empire, the Pantheon also has the largest masonry dome in the history of architecture. Continue to the Rococo-style Trevi Fountain on Piazza di Trevi. Follow tradition and throw a coin in the fountain to ensure you will one day return to Rome. Next, go to Piazza di Spagna to see the Spanish Steps and ocher-colored buildings that encircle Bernini’s fountain. Look at the Church Trinita dei Monti and the former home of the poets Keats and Shelley.
After a break for lunch, you can visit the Sistine Chapel and St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican City. Admire Michelangelo's ”Creation” and ”Last Judgment” in the Sistine Chapel. Gaze at frescoes by Botticelli, Perugino, Ghirlandaio and Signorelli. From the Sistine Chapel, a beautiful staircase by Bernini leads to St. Peter’s Basilica, where you will find masterpieces such as Michelangelo's “Pietà."
