A day of rolling hills, winding streets and cobble-stones. Reach Orvieto by train and tour the Etruscan caves. Then have lunch at a vineyard paired with the wines they make. A great way to spend a day during your stay in Rome.
What to Expect
Rome's most famous day trip is now even more accessible! You can't go into the countryside without having some wine at a vineyard. You will meet the guide directly at the Termini train station and after the hour and fifteen minute trip you will take the famous funicular to the top of the plateau where ancient Orvieto awaits you.

Stroll the cobble-stoned streets amid the Gothic and Romanesque architecture with a small break for a mid-morning tasting of local artisanal meats and cheeses. This small "salumiere" sells only products made around the town of Orvieto with some made strictly with ancient techniques. Then make your way to tour the Etruscan caves. Go back over 3,000 years ago and discover how the ancient Etruscans worked the land to provide shelter, water, food, olive oil and wine. No visit to Orvieto would be complete without it.

Afterwards, meander to the world famous Gothic structure known as the Duomo to marvel at the beautiful frescoes inside the Cappella di San Brizio. This masterpiece by Luca Signorelli (who also painted in the Sistine Chapel) is based on Dante Alighieri's Divine Comedy and has a turbulent history. Michelangelo could not help but be inspired by the passion that is evident on those walls: it is the basis of his fiery sermon in his Last Judgment of the Sistine Chapel.

After soaking in all that history, art and wine it will finally be time to go to the vineyard with a personal taxi service. You will be whisked away to one of the most spectacular vineyards in Italy. This award winning winery is part of the Slowine movement and the owner's passion for quality has him on the forefront of establishing a higher standard in wine making for Italy. The wines are made with indigenous grapes of the area plus a few that are internationally grown. Sit down for a very special tasting (weather permitting) in the covered outdoor area with sweeping views of the rolling hills of Umbria and the town of Orvieto itself as the backdrop! Your tasting will be paired with lunch made by the vineyard's extremely talented chef! Enjoy a feast that people have said was the best meal of their trip. Return to the train station where you will be taken back to the hustle and bustle of Rome.
