Overview
Learn about Roman cuisine and its history while tasting some of the best food in Rome on a 4-hour walking tour of Testaccio that takes you to the city’s most famous food stops. Discover open markets, family run pizzerias, fresh produce and more.
What to Expect
Taste the best of Rome as you explore the traditional, working-class rione (district) of Testaccio and discover the secrets to authentic Roman cuisine on a 4-hour walking tour.

Meet your guide at the historic Bar Barberini and learn how Italians take their breakfast. Then, continue to Testaccio Market, stopping at many of the stands to sample fresh produce, such as buffalo mozzarella, ricotta and pecorino cheese, and authentic porchetta and prosciutto (raw, Italian style ham).

Try bruschetta with extra-virgin olive oil and organic tomatoes. Pop into Trapizzino to discover a Testaccio institution and try more produce, and learn how suppli (rice balls) are made at Massimo and Luciano’s famous pizzeria, “Pizzettiere.”

Along the way you will see many of Testaccio’s cultural attractions, including the magical garden of the Artists’ Cemetery with its Cestius Pyramid. Go inside an historic inn to try some delicious Amatriciana, while the owner entertains you with fun stories. Depending on seasonal availability, you will also taste 2 kinds of pasta, served with a good red wine.

Grab a cannoli takeaway from an authentic Sicilian pastry shop, and take it to Parco degli Aranci on Aventine Hill, to sit under the shade of an orange tree and eat as you enjoy the views of Rome. End with a peek through the keyhole of the gate of the Knights of Malta for a stunning view of St. Peter’s Basilica.
