The first settlement can be traced back to the beginning of the 4th century BC, immediately after the defeat of the Etruscan town of Veio. Situated on the right bank of the river, Veio fell to the Roman army in 396 BC. Ostia was the 1st Roman colony, and acquired a commercial function to supply Rome with food, especially wheat.
Far from the hustle and bustle of central Rome (but just a short Metro ride away), Ostia Antica offers splendid examples of Roman frescoes and mosaics. Hear how Ostia became more autonomous towards the end of the Roman Republic, when the city was surrounded by a new circle of walls, traditionally attributed to the time of Sulla, although recent studies suggest it was built in the mid 1st century BC on the initiative of Cicero.
See the remains in a small group for a more intimate experience, and better views of sites such as the amphitheater, old warehouses, and much more.
