Explore the downtown area of Rio de Janeiro by Metro, light rail, and trolley and on foot. Start out with your guide in the historical center, then head to the Porto Maravilha area and end your tour in the bohemian neighborhood of Santa Teresa.
What to Expect
Meet your small group in the city center, where your guide will give you an overview of your 5-hour program. Then you’ll hop on the Metro and head downtown!
Exit the Metro at Rio’s most iconic plaza, where you’ll find the Municipal Theater, the National Library, the Museum of Belas Artes, and more. Stop at the city’s most traditional café, Confeitaria Colombo, and take a step back in time to the late 19th century.
After a small bite to eat, take a walk along the small and charming streets to Praça XV, the centerpiece of Rio’s historic downtown. As you continue on your guide will tell you about the history of Rio de Janeiro and Brazil, and how it differs from that of other colonized countries.
Admire the colonial architecture as you make your way to the revitalized area of the Centro. Porto Maravilha is an urban project that is changing the face of the city. Visit the recently inaugurated Museum of Tomorrow designed by Santiago Calatrava.
After you have seen both the new and the old, you’ll take a trolley ride over the Arches of Lapa to the hillside bohemian neighborhood of Santa Teresa. This French-influenced part of town is loaded with restaurants and shops and is the perfect place to spend some time away from the hustle and bustle of the city.
End your tour with a walk down the Selarón Staircase that has caught the interest of national and international visitors and has become one of the iconic places in Rio de Janeiro.
