Monte Smith Hill offers a magnificent view of the aquamarine-colored Aegean Sea and the whole City of Rhodes. We then continue on to the Ancient Rhodes Acropolis (dedicated to Zeus, Athena and Pythian Apollo) where we will be able to see 4 standing reconstructed columns. The final drive past it allows us to see the restored 2nd century Ancient Stadium and Theatre.
Next, is a favorite of the cruise ship passenger, the Grand Masters Palace in the Medieval City. Complete with a wide moat, this palace is quite imposing, and the pebble artwork is unmatched. The palace was built in the 1300s, destroyed in the 1800s, and rebuilt by the Romans in 1939.
Then enjoy a stroll down the "Avenue of the Knights", featuring architecture that has been untouched for the last 500 years. See how many emblems/coat of arms you can find on the inns! Keep in mind that Muslims, Christians and Jews have peacefully coexisted here for hundreds of years.
As Rhodes is famous for its pottery making, we'll stop during our one hour scenic drive along the East Coast of the island at the Village of Archangelos. Here, we'll see a live demonstration of the pottery wheel and ancient designs.
Finally, we will arrive in Lindos, once an ancient city of 50,000 people; these days the population is 400 in the winter, and 5,000 in the summer. Lindos was a hub of the Aegean Sea, with an Acropolis built 300 years before the Acropolis in Athens.
This "Jewel of the Island" village sits 345 feet (105 metres) above the water with breathtakingly beautiful photo opportunities. You'll be thrilled at the top of the Rhodes Acropolis with its 360 degree view of the islands, sea, beaches, and St Johns Bay below.
Your guide will explain about the town's theatre, the Great Stoa, theTemple of Athena Lindia, and the Temple of Dionysus. The lower picturesque medieval village is a labyrinth of interconnected pebbled streets, cafes, shops, churches and traditionally decorated homes dating back to the 1300's.
Our final stop is a visit to the 15th century medieval church dedicated to the Virgin Mary, with contains carved icons and 1600's wall paintings. Note: no flash cameras or guiding are allowed in the church.
