Full description
Get picked up in Reykjavík and set off for the experience of a lifetime, as you hike to a volcanic eruption at Geldingadalur. Head for the volcanic eruption at the Reykjanes Peninsula – where the first volcanic activity in the area for about 800 years is happening. The lava slowly coming up to the surface gives you a chance to experience this amazing natural wonder from a close distance. Our guide will hike up to the volcano with you and tell you all you need to know about the new Fagradalsfjall volcano. The hike is about 1.5-2 hours and has a moderate level of difficulty. Once you arrive, you'll get the chance to see the hot flowing lava of the volcanic eruption. We'll hike around the Fagradalsfjall volcano until we find the best location to sit and enjoy the view, before heading back down.

This trip was perfect! Just the right length to really get a great look at the volcano and the scenery, but not too long so as to get hungry or bored. The guide was really good- he gave us lots of info but didn’t overwhelm us. He kept up a good pace but also helped people who had a tougher time keeping up.

Since we were picked up at one of the last boarding points, the departure was delayed by 30 minutes beyond the agreed time window and we were afraid that we had been forgotten. When asked by phone, we were then confirmed that the bus was delayed. Unfortunately, the volcano was not active during our stay - it only really started again in the late afternoon with a burst of lava ... a shame. Still, it was a very interesting tour.

Leo is the best guide we have had in Iceland so far. The tour was exactly as advertised. Be prepared for some rather strenuous (but reasonably doable) hiking, about 1.5 miles each way. But you will be rewarded with spectacular views and a unique experience. I strongly recommend this particular tour.
