Take a day tour from Puebla to discover the archeological treasures of Cacaxtla. This hilltop site was the principal settlement of the Olmeca. See excavated ruins dating to 650 A.D. Visit the city of Tlaxcala and admire the murals in the mayoral palace.
What to Expect
Over the centuries, the area known has Tlaxcala has been an indigenous kingdom, a district of colonial New Spain, a territory of the Republic of Mexico, and finally a free and sovereign Mexican state .

Your full-day excursion begins with a guided tour at the archeological zone of Cacaxtla, the principal settlement of the Olmeca civilization. Cacaxtla was the most powerful capital in the Tlaxcala region from 650-1100 A.D. Although the site covers an area of 180,000 square feet, only Building B has been fully excavated.

The residential area consists of a labyrinth of rooms, patios, and passageways built around 2 main plazas oriented on a north-south axis, with a ground plan similar to Mayan palaces such as in Palenque.

Frescoes are found throughout the palace site. You’ll see the best preserved examples in the rooms adjoining the north plaza, a large courtyard that was the focus of Cacaxtla's ritual life.

After exploring Cacaxtla, you’ll continue to Tlaxcala, capital of the state of Tlaxcala, where you’ll visit the main plaza and have the opportunity to admire the murals in the Mayor´s Palace.
