Next on this 3-hour historical excursion is a visit to the Mausoleum of Klement Gottwald, who was the first president of Communist Czechoslovakia. Learn about the significance of the Mausoleum's location and opulent decoration. You’ll also see several additional Socialist Realist statues from mid-century Prague here.
Learn about the relationship between the Czech Communist Party and the USSR as you travel to central Prague by streetcar. See historical maps and archival images while listening to details about Communist Prague.
You’ll visit Wenceslas Square, a key location for gatherings of those who opposed Communist rule. Your guide will tell you the events behind the Prague Spring of 1968, and you’ll see significant monuments from that time, including the Jalta Hotel, the National Museum, and the former Communist Parliament.
Afterwards you’ll visit Narodny Street, where student demonstrations were held that contributed to the the Velvet Revolution of 1989. Learn about the role of the intelligentsia, and how Kundera, Havel, and other artists and writers influenced the revolution.

We meet to the left of the main entrance to the Billa supermarket located outside the Florenc metro station at Sokolovská 14/69. Note that a bus ticket (CZK 32) will be necessary for the first portion of this walk. If you do not have a ticket on hand, your docent can help you purchase one. The initial portion of this walk, which takes place on Vitkov Hill, requires a 10-minute steep climb (10 grade) up the hill. We suggest bringing water during the summer months. While you are prepaid for your time with the docent, you will be responsible for paying any entry fees while on site (about CZK 60).
Please wear comfortable walking shoes.
Children under 12 are not allowed on the shared group tour. Children are encouraged to accompany their parents on a private tour.
